Greenhouse Gas Methodology

Stockholm Environment Institute
Tool released April 2013

In 2008, the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) developed a methodology for calculating avoided greenhouse gas emissions from energy efficiency and renewable energy projects developed by GEF partnering agencies, which include the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program, and the United Nations Environment Program. On behalf of GEF’s Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel, Synapse and the Stockholm Environment Institute reviewed this methodology and developed a greenhouse gas emissions calculator to quantify emissions reductions resulting from investment projects in developing nations. This spreadsheet tool calculates project-specific emissions savings at the pre-implementation stage of programs. In addition to the tool, Synapse developed an accompanying user manual. The tool (released April 2013) and supporting materials were posted on the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) website.
