Utility Engagement Playbook for Industrial Customers

Developed by Synapse Energy Economics and the World Wildlife Fund for the Renewable Thermal Collaborative, the Utility Engagement Playbook for Industrial Customers: Addressing Power Sector Barriers to Electrification offers a detailed roadmap for industrial companies to overcome challenges in electrification by engaging with utilities and policymakers. Industrial electrification is essential for decarbonizing the U.S but utilities often lack clear pathways to help industrial customers transition to electrification. The high cost of electricity can make these transitions financially less attractive compared to using natural gas. The Playbook main objectives are to; 1) identify barriers to industrial electrification within the electric utility sector, 2) explore potential solutions through utilities, regulations, and 3) legislation to address these barriers and to provide guidance on how industrial customers can help advance these solutions.

By helping industrial customers understand key utility-related issues affecting electrification, this Playbook aims to support discussions between industrial customers and their utilities and offer strategies for regulatory and legislative advocacy.
